Dick "Doc" Iliano was responsible for keeping the Blue Streaks in fighting form during is 32 years as the athletic trainer. Before coming to Carroll, Doc worked at Baldwin Wallace and Western Reserve University while holding a bachelor's degree in physical education and a master's degree in body mechanics.

As an athlete, Doc lettered in football as a guard for Baldwin Wallace while becoming a Cleveland Athletic Club boxing champion.

In addition to his duties as athletic trainer for all of JCU's teams, Doc served stints as the varsity tennis and golf coach as well as freshman basketball coach at Carroll.

A charter member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Iliano served five years as trainer for the Washington Redskins and a year with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the teams' visits to Cleveland. He was a regular with the Browns, assisting head trainer Leo Murphy on the sidelines and locker room during the season.

As the 1972 Football program wrote, "Iliano is not only the trainer of all varsity sports, he is, in addition, an outstanding personality. His wit and humor is matched only by his outstanding ability and his personal concern for each team member's health and physical condition. All Carroll athletes, past and present, know he is the man to see for a cure for poor physical and mental condition. Invariably when old grads return, they seek out Iliano's sense of humor and outstanding memory of seasons and games gone by."
