Gene Oberst led an extremely eventful Carroll career between 1936 and 1951.
Previous to his involvement with JCU, he graduated from Notre Dame '24, a NCAA javelin champion in 1921, and a Bronze Medal winner for javelin at the 1924 Olympic games in Paris, France.
Oberst was then hired onto the football staff at John Carroll as a Line coach in 1936 and maintained that position until the war broke out. Â During this time he helped lead the team to earn the title "Big Four Champs." Â Keeping a position at JCU when the football team was put on the backburner for three years in 1936 due to World War II, he became the Director of JCU Navy V12 program.
He went on to become the Head Basketball Coach for the 1945-46 season, then the Head Football Coach for the 1946-47 season, and finally an Athletic Director and the first Head Track Coach in 1947. Â He remained a Track Coach for one season, and Athletic Director until 1951.
