London Fletcher left an indelible mark at John Carroll in his three seasons donning the Blue and Gold from 1995-1997.Â
A graduate of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, OH, Fletcher played basketball at St. Francis University of Pennsylvania for one season before transferring to JCU in 1995.Â
A First Team All-American in 1996, Fletcher’s 1997 season was one for the ages. That year, he was named the recipient of the Bill Edwards Award which is given to the OAC’s Most Outstanding Linebacker, a First Team All-American again, and the Football Gazette Division III Linebacker of the Year.Â
Along with the honors and awards, Fletcher also set school records in 1997 for tackles in a season with 202 and tackles in a game with 29 against Ohio Northern while helping the Blue Streaks win their first ever Division III playoff game. The linebacker amassed 386 tackles, 37 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and three interceptions during his JCU career. He also played on the Blue Streak basketball team for his high school coach Mike Moran.
Despite going undrafted in the 1998 NFL Draft, Fletcher enjoyed a 16 year playing career with the St. Louis Rams, Buffalo Bills, and Washington Redskins which included a Super Bowl XXXIV victory with the Rams during the 1999 season. He also started 215 consecutive games, which is the most by a linebacker in NFL history and was selected to the Pro Bowl four times.
Fletcher was inducted into the JCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008 and in 2017, his #3 jersey was retired by John Carroll as part of a 20 year anniversary celebration of the historic 1997 football team. Two years later, he became the first Blue Streak ever to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Currently, Fletcher works as an analyst for CBS Sports Network.
